Still Life Workshop
Instructor: N. Samuel Vokey, CM
Location: Boston, MA (Fenway Studios)
Dates: October 17 - October 18
Skill level: All levels
Member Fee: $400.00
Non-Member Fee: $465.00

Please join Sam Vokey inside the historic Fenway Studios for a two-day still life demonstration. Participants will learn how to set up and begin a sight-sized still life and will be astonished how quickly and accurately a painting can progress using this method. Vokey will simultaneously display paintings that highlight the development of impressionist “seeing” in Western painting.

The two-day workshop will provide an in-depth demonstration in still life painting. The second day will allow further development of the painting, equipping the student with the ability to go beyond the one day sketch. Some students get the most out of the class by watching and listening, while others prefer to bring their own gear and paint along with Sam.

Vokey's still lifes explore highly sophisticated balances of both overall composition and of light and dark values within the composition. As with the style of his Boston School predecessors, who admired and emulated simultaneously both French Salon painting and French Impressionism, Vokey's technique crosses Realism with the some of the softer edges and painterly qualities of Impressionism.

In 2007 Sam was awarded the John Singleton Copley Award, which is the highest honor given by The Copley Society of Boston. He was in his sixth show at Tree’s Place in Orleans and was featured in American Art Collector Magazine. In 2006 one of Mr Vokey’s still life’s appeared on the cover of the book “The Boston School” printed by Blue Tree Press. He is a member of the Guild of Boston Artists and he recently won the Tarbell award and the R.H.Ives Gammell Award. He has been awarded the coveted status of Copley Master by The Copley Society of Boston. In 2006, a still life by Mr Vokey was acquired by The Cape Cod Art Museum. He was the cover artist for American Artist Magazine April 2005 issue. In 2003 he was in the Vose Galleries National Invitational Show, Boston and he was the chosen artist for the annual Pop’s by the Sea painting, Hyannisport.
