Artist Process
Doug Rugh is available to paint portraits of adults, children and animals. Finished compositions may be of a head and shoulders or a full-size full-length subject. More than one person can be included in the painting and plain backgrounds, interiors or other locations can be used as a backdrop. The artist will be happy to discuss any questions you may have about portrait sittings and framing and will help you decide on all aspects of a formal or casual portrait.
Sittings/Travel
If the subject is available for sittings they may take place in the studio, on Cape Cod or the artist is also available for travel to your location.
Posthumous or Unavailable Models
Surprise gift portraits or posthumous portraits may be done from provided photographs but painting size will be limited to the level of detail in the photograph.
Head and Shoulders
Framing is provided. The portrait is slightly smaller than life size and prices are for plain or simple backgrounds. The artist will be happy to give you a quote for more complex backgrounds or interiors or other locations used as backdrops. It is also possible to have two portraits painted side-by-side.
The artist will schedule a two-hour painting session either in the studio or at the desired location. In the following weeks the artist will work from reference photos back in the studios. A second two-hour session will allow the artist to bring the portrait near to completion and then once back again in the studio the artist will apply the final glazes and frame the painting.
Painting time, from start to frame, will take between one and two months depending on the availability of models.
Three Quarter Length, Sitting or Standing & Full Length Figure
Portraits may be painted in any dimension besides the standard sizes listed which represent the range from small to large. Frames are not included in the price but the artist will handle the framing if desired. Custom frames start at around several hundred dollars.
Once the painting format is chosen Doug will take photographs in a short session either in the studio or a chosen environment. A composite or layout will then be made from the photographs for approval and then a painting session of about two hours will be arranged with the model in which the artist will create a small color working sketch of the head (which is also available framed for $900.) and hands (if needed). The artist will return to the studio with the sketch and the photographs to paint the portrait. If the subject is available for additional sittings the artist will then be able to enhance and add finishing touches to the final painting directly from the model.
