ARTIST'S PROCESS
Sharon Knettell is a recent recipient of the Robb Sagendorph Memorial Award which allowed her award-winning portrait to be reproduced in the February 1998 issue of Yankee magazine. Typically, Sharon visits with the clients to discuss the design of the portrait and become aware of their tastes and style. Since clothing is such an essential part of the portrait (a position taken by both Whistler and Sargent), suitable items will be selected or bought. Occasionally, Sharon will encourage the purchase of special garb for a portrait, since certain items paint better than others.
All portraits are done from life. The client must have a good location in his home with suitable natural lighting, or the portrait can be done in Sharon's studio. Photography will only be used for pose ideas and to decide on the final design and size of the finished painting.
Young children under 12 are another matter. Sharon will only do children who can sit. She will use photography here to set beside the child to keep a point of reference.
After many years as a portrait artist, Sharon has found that this is the best way for her to produce a canvas of lasting artistic value. Interestingly enough, she has gotten to know her sitters in a more personal way and they in turn have learned a lot about the process. Many of them have become friends. Since they have invested more than their money, the portrait - Sharon hopes - has more meaning that just another luxury purchase.
