Artist's Process

I look for the emotions of the sitter, what Italian masters called "monti mentali" or motions of the mind.  A successful portrait captures the essence of a person in a way that goes further than one moment to embrace the many moments and expressions of a lifetime.  It is a tribute to the whole of a life and character.

Planning your commission

My process starts with interviewing the subject to get acquainted.  During this interview we make choices regarding medium, size, pose, composition, clothing, etc.  Finally we set up a schedule of sittings from life and/or for taking photographs. To complete the portrait in a timely fashion, I allow approximately one to six months for oil and one to two months for drawings.
