The Artist's Proccess
My preference is to work from life without photographs. Most of my paintings and portraits are done this way. It typically takes four to six sittings of three hours to complete a portrait (depending upon the size, and whether it is a full length, three quarters, or head and shoulders portrait). I paint in a direct style without any initial sketch. When it isn’t possible to paint directly from life I will work from photos, such as when painting a small child, an infant, or a deceased person. Even then, wherever possible though, I prefer to do an initial oil sketch of the live person and will finish the painting with the live person. Typically I work in my studio; however I am happy to travel to the client’s home to work there if needed.
When starting a commissioned portrait I meet with the client, discuss their desired setting, attire, and the mood of the painting (whether formal or casual pose, type of clothing, etc.) and work out the schedule and location of the sittings. At the first sitting we will finalize the pose, I will take a couple of reference photos to aid the client with returning to the pose, and I will do a couple of initial quick sketches to get the feel of the portrait and to make sure the client is happy with the layout and look of the planned portrait. Additional details about the portrait are worked out with the sitter at this time.
