Artist's Process
Shelley Thayer Layton paints in a style of classical realism reminiscent of the Boston School.
In addition to commissioned portraits, she is also known for her still life and genre paintings.
Shelley meets with the client at her studio in Norwell Massachusetts to discuss the details of the proposed portrait. Many examples of the artist's work are on display to help with the decision process. Usually only one or two scheduled sittings are necessary; arranged so that the client does not have to sit for a number of hours. The client has the opportunity to review and approve the pose.
Portraits from photographs may also be commissioned; including posthumous works and portraits of ancestors. Shelley can create these heirloom portraits from color or B&W photography She prefers to work from studio and professional photographs; however most photos taken in natural taken in natural light may be suitable.
Shelley's best-known posthumous work is a memorial portrait of John F. Kennedy Jr., which is on view at the J.F.K.Family Museum in Hyannis, MA. Other commissioned works, painted from photographs, include portraits of N. Woodburn Nichols, founder of Nichols Village, Groveland MA. and 19th century author, Margaret Fuller.
The Financial Agreement
One third of the total price is due upon acceptance of the commission with the remainder due upon the portrait�s completion. Prices are approximate and vary depending on complexity, such as elaborate backgrounds and additional figures. Dimensions vary according to the composition best suited to the client's requirements. Portraits are painted on Belgian linen. Completed portraits are usually delivered in three to six months.
